About Rippopotamus
Formed in 1990 in Western Massachusetts’ Pioneer Valley, home to indie rock legends like Dinosaur Jr, The Pixies and Sebadoh, Rippopotamus quickly made a name for themselves in the local scene. After releasing two EPs, they capped off their time in the Valley with a performance alongside The Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Phish, Fishbone and the Beastie Boys at UMass Amherst’s 1992 Spring Concert. Moving to Boston in 1993, the band immersed themselves in the city’s horn-driven funk scene, sharing stages with acts like Bim Skala Bim and Chucklehead. Their debut full-length album “Butter” dropped in 1994 and they soon found themselves touring with Queen Latifah and opening for hip-hop icons like De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest and The Pharcyde.
